چکیده

Sphingoglycolipids (SGL) are cell membrane constituents. As the ceramide structure influences the biological properties of the SGL, we characterized by electrospray tandem mass spectrometry the molecular species of ceramides present in SGL of mouse brain. We report here for the first time the presence in mammalian brain of sphingadienine (d18:2). Sphingenine (d18:1) is present in all SGL species in contrast to eicosasphingenine (d20:1) which is only a constituent of gangliosides. Sphingadienine is present in galactosylceramide and sulfatides. Free ceramides contain the three types of bases. Thus there could be two separate pools of free ceramides (d18:1; d18:2) and (d20:1; d18:1) as precursors of complex

Characterization of overall ceramide species in human stratum corneum.

Ceramides (CERs) in human stratum corneum (SC) play physicochemical roles in determining barrier and water-holding functions of the skin, and specific species might be closely related to the regulation of keratinization, together with other CER-related lipids. Structures of those diverse CER species, however, have not been comprehensively revealed. The aim of this study was to characterize over...

Quantification of Melittin in Iranian Honey Bee (Apis mellifera meda) Venom by Liquid Chromatography-electrospray Ionization-ion Trap Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-ESI-IT-MS/MS)

The current research aimed to quantify melittin (MEL) in Iranian honey bee (Apis mellifera meda) venom. To this end, a liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-IT-MS/MS) approach was employed. Melittin is the main toxic peptide of honey bee venom with various biological and pharmacological activities. It was extracted with...

Separation, identification and quantitation of ceramides in human cancer cells by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry.

Ceramides are important intracellular second messengers that play a role in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation and programmed cell death. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of these second messengers requires sensitive and specific analytical methods to detect endogenous levels of individual ceramide species and to differentiate between them. Nine synthetic ceramides were separat...

Structural Analysis of Fungal Cerebrosides

Of the ceramide monohexosides (CMHs), gluco- and galactosyl-ceramides are the main neutral glycosphingolipids expressed in fungal cells. Their structural determination is greatly dependent on the use of mass spectrometric techniques, including fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry, electrospray ionization, and energy collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry. Nuclear magnetic resonance...
